A Spotlight on Caring for National Carers Week
Sunday 13 October marks the beginning of National Carers Week. This is an opportunity for everyone, including organisations like Baptcare, to thank and recognise all that carers do for loved ones and the community.
What is a Carer?
A carer is generally a family member or a friend who provides unpaid care and support for someone that has a disability, chronic condition, serious or terminal illness, is aged, has a mental illness or other conditions that require care and support.
Who can be a Carer?
Anyone can be a Carer.
Carers come from all walks of life and represent a diverse range of cultures, ages, responsibilities and experiences. All of them balance their carer responsibilities with other responsibilities like work, study and their physical and mental health and life in general.
What do Carers do?
Caring can include but isn’t limited to assisting loved ones with personal or health care, medications, transport and administration needs, housekeeping/household chores, meal preparation and other miscellaneous activities.
Carers play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for those they support, promoting their independence, dignity and wellbeing.
Wherecan Carers find support?
Carers require support too, from their families and friends to the community, workplaces, governments and beyond.
Carers Australia and their state and territory branches have excellent resources for carers to tap into and seek assistance. For example, there are carer support networks and groups, respite care, wellbeing resources and even podcasts for carers through Spotify, Headspace app and more. See the website for more details: National Carers Week
The theme this year for National Carers Week 2024, is millions of reasons to care and it aims to broaden the awareness of the 3 million Australians caring for their family members and friends.
Thank you to all the carers out there – we cannot thank you enough for the incredible support and care you provide to your loved ones.
