After a respite stay Ken decided to make Westhaven his home

After experiencing the high-quality care at Baptcare Westhaven Community during a short-term respite stay, Ken Beever decided to make it his home.

Once he turned 80, Ken began to find everyday tasks harder to manage, which made living at home alone a struggle. “I wasn’t caring for myself as well as I should. It was a day’s work to go and do the shopping, and household chores were becoming very difficult,” says Ken.

Ken initially opted for a temporary respite stay at Baptcare Westhaven Community for some extra support. But after realising that on-site care gave him the freedom to spend his time as he pleased, he decided to make the move permanent.

“I’m very happy here. I have all the help I need,” says Ken. “I get three meals a day, plus morning and afternoon tea and supper. All my washing and cleaning is taken care of and help is always on hand, if I need it. All I have to do is relax and do the things I enjoy.”

For Ken, this involves playing music, watching television and using his computer. “I’ve been a musician all my life so I brought my keyboard with me and play it often. And I’m having a go at doing my family tree, which keeps me busy.”

When he wants to socialise, the constantly evolving activity and lifestyle program provides plenty of options, says Ken. “They recently started up a Men’s Group – I have been to three meetings so far. And every Thursday there’s a concert where we have a singalong to old favourites.”

A community within a community

Whether it’s through the activities program or simply chatting to staff or other residents in the lovely shared areas or gardens, Ken says he can always find company at Baptcare Westhaven Community. “It’s important to have people around that you can talk to, and you’ve certainly got that here.”

As a Footscray local, Ken enjoys the proximity to the local community and regularly sees familiar faces. One of his local friends recently moved in as well. “He came here for a respite stay but eventually had to decide whether to proceed to permanent care, and I encouraged him to do so.”

Staff and facilities that impress

Ken has now been living at Baptcare Westhaven Community for a year and says he is very impressed by the commitment of the staff and the level of care he receives. “The people here are very dedicated and helpful. Many of the staff members go way beyond the call of duty.” He also enjoys the thoughtful design of the community. “There is plenty of natural light and varied spaces to spend time. I enjoy walking through the corridors for my exercise,” says Ken. “I think the architect who designed this place did a great job.”
