Volunteer Gardener: Sanctuary - Preston and Brunswick

Sanctuary provides transitional housing to empower homeless asylum seekers.  The Gardening Volunteer engages residents in small and local gardening projects at Sanctuary.

About the volunteer role:

Sanctuary aims to promote asylum seeker residents’ skills and abilities, to equip them for independent life in the Australian community. Residents face comprehensive challenges as they await the resolution of their applications for protection, including legal, medical, economic (employment and educational), housing, language/cultural, and other issues.   Separation from loved ones and ongoing stress and uncertainty, may also contribute to mental health concerns.

The Gardening Volunteer will work in Sanctuary sites (Brunswick and Preston), to engage residents with an interest in gardening, in small and local gardening projects.    The main aim of the role is to assist residents to develop their involvement in the Sanctuary community and to learn about gardening in Australia. The secondary objective of the role is to contribute to the productiveness, beauty and amenity of Sanctuary facilities.

Suitability for this role depends on the person’s interest in and ability to engage residents, as well as on their gardening skills and knowledge.   Initially it may be difficult to involve residents, however over time our hope is that the Gardener’s low key friendly approach and steady reliability will succeed in attracting interest and involvement of Sanctuary residents in developing and maintaining small productive and visually pleasing gardens at Sanctuary.

Volunteer start date: April 2016

Time Required: 1 day per week (or ½ day as a minimum) between Mondays and Fridays during the day.

Mandatory:

  • Demonstrated and successful experience in gardening
  • Strong knowledge and skills in work health and safety
  • Consultative and inclusive approaches
  • A creative orientation and passion for developing beautiful, productive, sustainable gardens

Satisfactory Police Check (must be renewed if applicant’s Police Check is more than 3 months old) (Note that Baptcare will arrange the Check if a current one is not produced).
