Update: Brookview Community - Westmeadows, Victoria

Posted: 1 September 2020

Baptcare can confirm that there are currently twelve active cases of COVID-19 linked to Baptcare Brookview Community in Westmeadows.

There are now eight active cases among residents, including two who are receiving care in hospital. All other residents continue to receive care and support in our dedicated COVID positive wing as they recover.

There are now four active cases among staff who are now isolating at home. We continue to be in touch with them regularly and support them in their recovery.

Any staff who have been in direct contact with the impacted residents are in self-isolation.

Our primary concern during this time is the wellbeing, health and safety of our residents and staff. We are actively working with the Federal Government and the relevant health authorities who now play a vital role in the management of the outbreak at Brookview:

  • The Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) have been on site regularly assessing our procedures, providing advice on infection prevention and control and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • We have also been very grateful to have a nurse on site every day since the outbreak from the Northern Health Residential In-reach Program. The nurse has been seeing and monitoring all our residents who have tested positive for COVID-19. They have also been providing advice on infection prevention and control.

All residents at Baptcare Brookview Community are remaining in their rooms. Zone segregation will be maintained across the community. All staff will wear personal protective equipment (PPE) – N95 masks, gloves, goggles and gowns. Staff will also sanitise their hands immediately prior to entering any room, and again immediately after. Only essential staff will be allowed on site.

We continue to monitor the health of residents and check their temperatures daily. Existing processes to screen and temperature check all staff daily remain in place.

The staff members are isolating at home and will only return when medically cleared. All staff who have been in close contact with the impacted staff member are in self-isolation.

In a joint effort with state and federal health agencies, Baptcare continues to make every effort possible to protect our residents and staff by limiting the spread of COVID-19 within Brookview and again become a COVID-free facility.

We continue to communicate daily with all families of residents by telephone and email to provide them with updates during this challenging time.

Baptcare remains focused and committed to providing our best care for all residents and to protect our staff – their health and wellbeing remains our unwavering number one priority.
