Update: Baptcare Brookview Community, Baptcare Hedley Sutton Community and Baptcare Westhaven Community

Posted 25 August 2020

Previously, Baptcare confirmed that there are currently three staff members of Baptcare Residential Aged Care Communities who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Brookview Residential Aged Care Community, located in Westmeadows

All residents continue to be well and are not experiencing any symptoms.

All staff were tested on site today. We await the results. All residents will be tested on site tomorrow, Wednesday, 26 August.

Hedley Sutton Residential Aged Care Community, located in Camberwell

All residents continue to be well and are not experiencing any symptoms.

We can confirm that this afternoon we were notified by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) that a pathology error had been discovered which impacts Hedley Sutton. A contract staff member who had been previously reported as positive for COVID-19, was in fact NEGATIVE.

We have been advised by DHHS that Hedley Sutton can now return to normal operations:

  • Our staff no longer need to work in full personal protective equipment (PPE). We will continue to work in masks, as was the practice prior to this lockdown.
  • Residents will be able to move freely outside of their rooms from tomorrow morning on their own floors.
  • Meal services in the dining areas on each floor will recommence from tomorrow morning.
  • Daily screening of all residents using the screening tool provided by Safer Victoria will continue as a precaution. Temperature checks will also be completed daily.

Westhaven Residential Aged Care Community, located in Footscray

All residents continue to be well and are not experiencing any symptoms.

All residents and staff were tested on site Friday, 21 August 2020, and Saturday, 22 August 2020 and we have received all the test results. They are all negative.

A second round of testing is planned for all residents and staff on site on Thursday, 27 August 2020.

Our primary concern during this time is the wellbeing, health and safety of our residents and staff. These cases were reported to the relevant Health authorities and we are taking advice from them.

Out of an abundance of caution, we continue to isolate all residents at Brookview and Westhaven in their rooms and maintain segregation in each of these communities. All staff will wear personal protective equipment (PPE) – masks, gloves, goggles and gowns. Staff will also sanitise their hands immediately prior to entering any room, and again immediately after. Only essential staff will be allowed on site.

We continue to monitor the health of residents and check their temperatures daily. Existing processes to screen and temperature check all staff daily remain in place.

The staff members are isolating at home and will only return when medically cleared. All staff who have been in close contact with the impacted staff member are in self-isolation.

We are well prepared and taking every action we can to minimise any cross contamination.

We have contacted all families of residents of each community by telephone and email and communicated this information to them. We will provide regular updates to residents and their families, and our staff.
