Important update: Father’s Day weekend Victorian Baptcare Communities

6 September 2020

An important clarification regarding all planned visits to Baptcare residential aged care communities over the Father’s Day weekend

It has come to our attention that recent advice we provided on visiting Baptcare residential aged care communities over the Father’s Day weekend was incorrect and we have reviewed the directive  from the relevant health authorities.

At this time, visiting conditions in all residential aged care communities are subject to State Government Direction outlined below as part of the Victorian Care Facilities Direction (No 10), specifically the definition of visitors, limits on visits (section 7):

“(b) in the case of a resident of a facility aged 18 years or over – the person is the parent, guardian, partner, carer or support person of the resident, and the person’s visit is for the purpose of providing emotional and social support to the resident that cannot be provided by that person via electronic or other non-contact means; or Limit: only 1 visitor, once per day, for a maximum of 1 hour…

…(e) the person’s presence at that facility is for the purposes of providing essential care and support necessary for the resident’s immediate emotional and social wellbeing (including mental health supports) that optimises the care and support delivered by workers at the facility and cannot be provided by that person via electronic means; Limit: only 1 visitor at any one time.”

What does this mean?

Unfortunately, this means all visitor bookings at our local residential aged care communities in Victoria will need to be reviewed by the local Manager in line with this directive. Following this review, this may mean that some planned ‘face to face’ visits over the Father’s Day weekend may not fit these criteria and will need to change to an ‘electronic or non-contact visit’ such as a window visit or a telephone/video call.

Please note, if the Department of Health have in place a lockdown order at any of our aged care homes on 5 and 6 September 2020, then visits will not be permitted at those particular homes.

We are sensitive to special circumstances of our residents, families and friends and are particularly sympathetic to those in end of life care. In these circumstances, please contact your Residential Care & Services Manager to discuss visiting options.

What next?

We very much apologise for any confusion and inconvenience caused by our previous advice.

Local Managers will be in contact with all planned visitors to confirm arrangements on an individual basis.

Baptcare remains committed to taking on advice and implementing the infection control strategy of the relevant health authorities. Our role continues to be focussed on delivering care to our residents to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
