Staying safe and well at home

The current stay at home restrictions across Victoria present challenges for us all, but it presents a particular challenge for those of us who live alone.

After weeks of isolation, feeling lonely or anxious is completely understandable and unfortunately, quite common. It’s natural to worry about the well-being of your family, friends and neighbours, especially when you cannot see them face to face as you normally would do.

With COVID-19 risk factors being highest for those with weakened immune systems, the priority is to ensure we stop the spread of the virus. However, it is also important we do what we can to minimise the impacts of social isolation and support them to continue living well and independently at home.

Tips to stay safe and well at home:

  • Stay connected: Whether via phone, letters, or online, a conversation and regularly checking in on family members, friends or your next-door neighbour can make a big difference to helping ease stress and anxiety.
  • Maintain healthy habits: A healthy diet and regular, light exercise are more important than ever. Cook and enjoy your favourite meals – you could even ask a family member or friend to join you virtually using an online tool like Zoom or Skype.
  • Follow the sun: Fresh air and sunlight do us all wonders so when the sun is out, try to get outside for a walk, some gardening, or even just a cup of tea in the backyard.
  • Consider joining an online community – there could be a group out there that shares your interests whether that be gardening, crafts, knitting, cooking or puzzles.
  • Share a care package: Leave a thoughtful gift, bag of goodies, books and magazines, or a home-cooked meal on the doorstep of your neighbour.

And remember, it’s ok to need some extra help.

Family members can visit if it is in line with the Department’s care-giving exemption and offer to do some shopping, run errands, or help around the house.

Remember when visiting to follow the latest advice from the health authorities, including avoiding physical or close contact, practicing safe hand-washing and respiratory hygiene, and wearing personal protective equipment as required.
