Support Houses of Hope

“The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.” – Maya Angelou

For the 5,500 people seeking asylum living in Victoria1, with limited rights to access employment and little government support, there is no certainty to finding shelter.  Most asylum seekers and their children experience periods of or permanent homelessness.

Our Houses of Hope program provides transitional housing and support services to men, women and children seeking asylum. We work with people seeking asylum to find a place to live in the community – a shelter and a safe place for them to belong. Baptcare’s case workers and a team of local volunteers provide support to connect them to community, access community resources and move towards a new life in Australia. Importantly, this allows children the stability to attend and remain in school. Hear from our Caseworker Coordinator, Ruth Buckmaster if you wish to learn more.

Help Children like Farad

Since its inception*, Houses of Hope have provided a home for ~100 people seeking asylum, including 45 children, like Farad.

Farad** has been able to settle into regular school attendance through the stable housing and support of volunteers. Without any form of income, the family had moved from one temporary ‘home’ to another over several years. The constant moving made consistent school attendance impossible. This was further exacerbated during the period when schooling at home was compulsory. Through Houses of Hope, the family now has stable housing and support through community volunteers. While Farad has missed much of the essential learning and social opportunities of the early years of school due to the family’s financial hardship, Farad is now able to form friendships and build on his learning in a supportive new local school.

Will you partner with us to provide a home and support to men, women and children seeking asylum?
