BAPTCARE has awarded a multi-million dollar contract to Watpac for construction in the first phase of its major redevelopment of the Baptcare Strathalan Community in Macleod.

Baptcare Chief Executive, Graham Dangerfield said the contract, worth $24 million, includes the construction of a new three-storey aged care facility.

Additional work to be undertaken by Watpac includes an access road, car park and associated landscaping.

“Watpac’s work is only part of the major redevelopment that our Strathalan Community will undergo over the next few years.

“As our oldest aged care complex, it remains an important part of our heritage. The redevelopment will not only increase the number of people we can care for, but will give both existing and new residents more facilities including a new social, wellbeing and activities centre,” said Graham Dangerfield.

Strathalan was established in 1945 and marked the start of Baptcare. The facility was opened by a group of Baptist women who joined together to raise £4000 to start providing care for older people.

The first stage of the redevelopment is scheduled for completion in 2016. Further development at the site will include over 100 new retirement units and apartments.
