For the past 59 years, Merle Watkins has dedicated her life to helping others. As one of Baptcare’s longest serving volunteers, Merle ‘brings care to life’ through the gift of music.

Since Merle was a child, she loved to play the piano and dedicated 12 years of her youth to learning the craft.

A recreational performer at various Baptist gatherings, Merle started volunteering at Strathalan Community and now provides regular sound relief to the residents at Hedley Sutton and Karana Community.

“I love older people and I was thrilled by the opportunity to become a volunteer…I love doing it and I love helping people. When the residents see me, they always thank me for my music,” said Merle.

For the residents, the chance to hear live music is a rare and wonderful experience. Recently Merle entertained residents with a series of Christmas carols; a treat for those who will be spending Christmas alone.
