Baptcare’s local home visiting service, Home-Start, has just reached its one year anniversary, and in that time has made a significant difference to the lives of local families and volunteers.

Home-Start is a program where trained volunteers are matched with socially isolated families living in Bendigo who have preschool aged children. Volunteers visit a family in their own home once a week to provide friendship and support.

The program, which already runs in the west of Melbourne, was expanded to Bendigo after research showed a growing need for services to assist young families who are facing parenting issues, have limited support networks and resources and/or have multiple children.

Already 21 families have received support from volunteers in Bendigo and by the end of 2009 this figure is set to double.

Ms Casey Rowe is one individual who has experienced the benefits of the program first hand.

“As a single mum on a disability pension with no car, I find it very difficult to do my shopping, pay bills and attend doctor’s appointments without relying on family to help me, but with the assistance of Home-Start and its wonderful band of volunteers, these things can be achieved.

“The volunteers have a vast knowledge of the Bendigo region and all organisations in the area that are available to help when difficult situations may arise. They can help me get in touch with councillors, women’s groups, volunteer groups and places where I can take my children. They offer great support and friendship and are just a wonderful group of caring people who are there to listen and help at any time,” Ms Rowe said.

In addition to home-visiting, the Home-Start program provides a range of social functions throughout the year that allow young families to connect with others in similar situations.

“The functions are a great opportunity for people like me to be able to meet other mothers, relax and have a talk. It is also great for the little ones to be around other children their own age to play and interact and just have fun,” Ms Rowe said.

Baptcare’s Home-Start Coordinator in Bendigo, Ms Jane Worthington, is hoping that more people in the community will get involved.

“Home-Start is a great program which I am really passionate about. We currently need more volunteers and I would love to hear from anyone who has parenting experience, loves children and wants to get involved in their community,” Ms Worthington said.
