Savant is an intelligent and optimistic eighteen year old with a dream of becoming involved in genetic research. He also has Muscular Dystrophy.
Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic condition where the muscles in the body become too weak to use. Savant is confined to a wheelchair, is unable to move most of his body and struggles with severe fatigue.
Savant’s family have supported and encouraged him, yet they have struggled financially to meet his high-level needs.
But that hasn’t stopped Savant from chasing his dream of studying Genetic Science at Melbourne University. Despite being unable to turn the pages of a text book and needing a full-time aide, Savant achieved an ENTER of 95.05 at secondary school last year, and a scholarship to Melbourne University.
Over the past four years, Baptcare has supported Savant by linking him to community services, assisting with funding and arranging a carer to take notes for him at school. Last year, Baptcare provided Savant with a new laptop to ensure that he could study at home and use the internet for research.
Savant’s parents both have academic backgrounds and have been fantastic role-models for him. They are very proud of his achievements and very grateful for all the extra support he has received.
Savant will face more obstacles as his condition continues to deteriorate and his organs have to work overtime to function day-to-day. His doctors have recommended that Savant would benefit from a Cough Assist Machine to allow him to cough independently, however this is something the family cannot afford.
“Savant is an inspirational person. He has overcome huge adversity to realise his dream and is a great example to others of what can be achieved with hard work and determination,” said Baptcare’s Chief Executive, Mr Jeff Davey.
Baptcare worker, Rose, commented on how focused and dedicated Savant has been over the years she’s known him. “He’s made so many sacrifices as an adolescent and has spent all his spare time on his studies and research so that he could reach his goal,” she said. “Savant is a very humble and charismatic young person who appreciates everything in life.”
Savant has used his medical condition as a form of inspiration from which to learn and grow. As a result of his condition, he has dedicated himself to continued learning and wants to help others through research.
“Never get demoralised by the challenges you face, because the challenges can be overcome if you work hard,” Savant says.
