Karana Community, Baptcare’s residential aged care facility in Kew, is more than just a home, for Anne*, coming to the facility meant a second chance at life.
In 2006 at the age of 68, Anne came to Karana Community desperately seeking care and support to help her cope with Bipolar Disorder, which she had been battling for the past 25 years.
Bipolar Disorder is a complex disease which is characterised by extreme highs (mania) and extreme lows (depression). Of the past 25 years, Anne had spent 22 years in and out of hospitals, unable to cope with the debilitating disease.
After overdosing on medication at her previous home, Anne’s health was in a fragile state. But after moving to Karana three years ago, Anne has not needed to go back to hospital.
“Before I came to Karana, I hadn’t functioned properly for 22 years. But thanks to the care and support from the nurses, choir services and chaplain, my life has been far more enriched. Being at a place of prayer has made a really big difference.
“When I’m feeling low, I’ll tell a nurse and we pray together. They are very understanding and now, I just don’t have the depression like I used to… since I came to Karana,” said Anne.
