Almost five years ago, George Athanasakos woke up one evening with what seemed like a mild headache. Within seconds, he fell into a coma; he had suffered a sudden aneurism.

George is now wheelchair bound, unable to talk and the right-hand side of his body is paralysed.

Life for George, the once independent and free-spirited grandfather, and his family, hasn’t been the same since. Kali, George’s daughter, said the transition was one of the most stressful experiences of her life.

“When something like this happens to a family, you don’t know where to start…sometimes you think it’s all the big things you need to focus on but it’s actually all the little things.

“Before Baptcare arrived in our lives, the support Dad was receiving was not good…although Dad can’t speak, he use to grunt; a sign that he was not happy…his dignity wasn’t taken into account,” said Kali.

George with his family and Care ManagerBut in 2006, George and his family were linked with Baptcare.

“When Judy, Dad’s Care Manager, approached us, it was a massive relief. Within five minutes of Judy speaking to us, she was able to read between the lines.

“She got a great understanding as to what my father’s needs were …she was nurturing and she just listened,” said Kali.

George now receives tailored support including assistance from a personal carer, physiotherapy and speech therapy. He also attends the Baptcare’s Men’s Social Group which has improved his confidence and independence.

“Baptcare has helped us so much…dad now has a motorised wheelchair and an outdoor ramp…he can now go outside and enjoy watching mum in the garden,” said Kali.

Since Baptcare approached George and his family, life has improved drastically. Most importantly, George has reclaimed some of his independence and dignity.

“The support we have received has been life changing…Judy and Baptcare have become part of our extended family. We feel like we’re part of their family and they’re part of ours,” said Kali.
