Tom Hvala, Walter Paton and Felicity RentosDespite the significant age gap, 95 year old Baptcare Karana Community resident, Walter Paton, and high school student, Tom Hvala, have forged an unlikely friendship.

In 2008, the pair hit it off after Ms Felicity Rentos, Baptcare’s Lifestyle Coordinator, approached Walter’s former high school, Scotch College, in a bid to find Walter a companion with similar interests.

“Walter has strong ties with Scotch College, he loved the time he spent there as a student and he often talks about all his fond memories. I knew that if I could find someone he could talk to about his time at the school, there would be the potential for a meaningful and lasting friendship…but I wasn’t expecting anyone to fulfil the request,” said Ms Rentos.

For Walter, the experience has not only resulted in a new friend, it has also given him the chance to reflect on the good old days.

“It’s been really good having Tom come and visit me… it’s been interesting getting to know him and I’ve enjoyed comparing my experiences with Tom’s,” said Walter.

Besides sharing stories about Scotch College, the duo also enjoy chatting about many other topics including Walter’s time in Papua New Guinea as a Corporal in the army.

“Spending time with Walter has been a really good experience. Initially our connection related to our ties with Scotch, but now it's focused on learning about each other. Walter is always positive and it’s interesting to get a different perspective on issues. It’s also interesting to connect with someone from another generation,” said Tom.

The pair keep in contact with regular face-to-face conversations. In recent months, Tom’s mum has also enjoyed spending time with Walter.

“This is a rare and unique example of a friendship blossoming over many years. Most importantly, it demonstrates our commitment to the older population and the importance of keeping the elderly feeling connected to their community,” said Mr Jeff Davey, Baptcare’s Chief Executive.
