As foster carers, Brigette and Bob have spent the last 22 years providing love and support to more than 380 troubled children – and have no plans to stop there.

“Originally, we got into fostering so our own kids could see how other people lived and to help them appreciate what they did and didn’t have,” Brigette said.

“Now it’s all about giving someone a helping hand.”

Brigette and Bob decided to speak out about the joys of foster caring, in the hope of encouraging more families to volunteer.

Foster carers provide temporary care for children in their own homes and offer the love and support these kids need during difficult times.

At present, Brigette and Bob care for two foster children, aged three and nine, at their Cairnlea home.

Over the years they have cared for children of all ages and for varying lengths of time – from one night to two years.

Brigette said there were many positives in being a foster parent including feeling like you have a full home, and knowing you’re helping someone out. “It’s an all-round good idea,” she said.

Bob agrees that there aren’t many negative aspects of the role. “There is the possibility that you may not get along with the child but that is very rare,” he said.

Foster carers also play a key role in reuniting children with their families, if and when it is safe to do so.

Carers are fully supported by professional foster care workers, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Brigette encourages families to give it a go. “There are so many kids out there who need a roof over their head and just someone to give them a kiss goodnight.”

Baptcare is actively encouraging people who might be interested to take that step.
