At the age of 96, Rev Dr George Lazenby, a resident in an independent living unit at Baptcare’s Strathalan Community, does not let his age restrict his lifestyle and to prove it, he recently completed a Graduate Certificate of Philosophy with a distinction average.
“This is a rare and remarkable achievement. Rev Dr George Lazenby is a wonderful example of an individual who is determined to live life to its fullest, regardless of age, and we are proud to be able to support his passions and lifestyle,” said Baptcare’s Chief Executive, Mr Jeff Davey.
Rev Dr Lazenby is keen to keep his mind constantly active. “It’s essential to always keep the brain occupied and active. This course has enabled me to further stretch my mind. I recently read an article about neuroplasticity which highlighted that if the brain is to remain active, it needs to be constantly worked…otherwise it will get worn out,” said Rev Dr Lazenby.
A lover of history and debates, the retired Baptist Minister has collected numerous credentials over the course of his professional career including a PhD, MA, BD and a Certificate of Education in Philosophy.
An author of children’s novels, the great grandfather’s most recent piece was created with a personal touch. Titled ‘Reflections of a Nonagenarian’, the book celebrates the significant individuals who have entered and influenced his life.
“I wouldn’t describe my latest book as an autobiography, it’s rather an indication of the people that have influenced my life,” said Rev Dr Lazenby.
This includes his wife and greatest love, Mona. Mona is a high care resident at Strathalan Community and although they do not have the chance to share every moment together, it’s always a special occasion when they do share a meal or a quiet chat
“I see my wife twice a day, morning and afternoon. Time with Mona is precious, we don’t have much time left so we want to make the most of the time we have together,” said Rev Dr Lazenby.
“At Baptcare we are proud to be able to assist individuals to live richer lives by supporting their passions, creating communities and celebrating what’s most important to them. It’s fantastic to see that one of our residents, who has already achieved so much, is able to continue learning and experiencing new things,” said Mr Davey.
Rev Dr Lazenby, already a Doctor of Philosophy, has just enrolled in his next course, a Graduate Certificate of Ancient History.
Strathalan Community is home to 223 residents including high and low care residents and those living in independent units or lodge accommodation.
