Hedley Sutton Community is the recent winner of a Better Practice Award in Aged Care for its exceptional Lifestyle program! Congratulations Hedley Sutton!

Hedley Sutton Community is an aged care facility located in Canterbury, with peaceful courtyard gardens. Opened in 1966, Hedley Sutton was named after an eminent Baptist who served as a missionary in India for 20 years before being appointed as Assistant Headmaster of Carey Baptist Grammar School.

Hedley Sutton has 93 residential aged care beds caring for both high and low care residents. The facility has a homely feel, with light and bright communal areas and a mix of shared and single rooms.

The staff are a dedicated team of registered nurses, personal carers, pastoral and therapy staff. These staff members work together to help residents to remain as independent as possible while receiving the care, support and assistance they need.

Staff ensure that both the resident and their family are involved when planning the resident’s care to ensure individual needs are understood and met. Staff are also supported with a varied education program.

There is a lively activities program with both group and individual programs. Regular outings on the Baptcare bus also enable residents to remain connected to the local community. Families and friends are encouraged to join in the activities.

Meals are cooked onsite with the menu reviewed by a dietician to ensure residents’ nutritional needs are met. Choices at mealtimes also ensure that residents’ tastebuds are always tempted.

A renovated heritage-listed mansion will soon be Hedley Sutton residents' new home.

An Italianate style mansion in Canterburry purchased by Baptcare in 1998 is currently being reinvented as a Baptcare Residential Aged Care Facility. The facility will become the new home for the residents of Hedley Sutton. Works on the first floor of the new facility are well underway, marking the start of the mansion’s $25 million new lease on life.

The heritage listed property has created design challenges for the site’s redevelopment crew, resulting in much of the mansion being refurbished to provide resident amenities such as a lounge, library, café, hairdresser and other communal facilities. The new facility will have 100 beds, and 38 independent living units which will be sold individually, allowing Baptcare to provide care for more elderly Victorians in need. Building works are due to be finalised in early 2008.
